How LaSalle Agri Got Started

A Family Vision for Farming

More than 15 years ago, Harry Buurma and his two sons saw an opportunity to bring new solutions to Ontario’s agricultural sector. At the time, fertilizers derived from biosolids were beginning to emerge, but adoption faced hurdles: complex regulations, heavy metal testing requirements, and restrictions near residential areas. Where others saw barriers, the Buurma family recognized potential, for both farming and the environment.

Building a Sustainable Alternative

Farmers were seeking alternatives to traditional manure, particularly fertilizers rich in organic matter and micronutrients. When the City of Windsor’s biosolid-based fertilizer was being handled unsatisfactorily by another distributor, Buurma proposed taking over management entirely. The decision secured LaSalle Agri’s certified contract with the city, a partnership that continues today and ensures oversight of how these nutrient-rich products are processed, distributed, and applied.

Refining the Process

As leadership transitioned, Harry’s sons advanced the company’s processes. Improvements in nutrient concentration and product consistency enhanced the agricultural value of the fertilizer while diverting significant volumes of material from landfills. These refinements strengthened the product’s role in supporting soil health and crop growth, while aligning with broader goals of sustainability and resource efficiency.

Supplying Farmers Across Southwestern Ontario

Over the years, demand has grown among local farmers who recognize the benefits of fertilizers high in organic matter and micronutrients. By replenishing soils and supporting yields, LaSalle Agri’s products have become part of a balance between agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship, an approach that has earned trust within Southwestern Ontario’s farming community.

Growing with Purpose

Today, LaSalle Agri is on track to surpass 200,000 tons of product distributed, an important milestone underscoring both growth and commitment to the industry. Through collaboration with regulatory bodies and a continued focus on compliance, quality, and environmental responsibility, the company has established itself as a certified leader in Ontario’s fertilizer sector.

From Family Vision to Agricultural Legacy

What began as a family’s vision has grown into a model for sustainable agriculture. By turning challenges into opportunities, LaSalle Agri demonstrates how innovation and stewardship can go hand in hand, providing farmers with tools that support productivity while protecting the environment for future generations.
